Eva Koethen (2024). Found objects, rusted iron pipes

Eva Koethen’s sculpture GOLEM IN RUINS (2024) is made of found objects – four rusted iron pipes –  standing together in a group. Their backs showing harsh injuries, they convey a vulnerability that is contrasted by a miraculous stability and a unified sense of direction.

The title GOLEM IN RUINS relates this work to the medieval automaton created by Jewish mystics as a result of their intense optimistic effort to counteract the withdrawal of humanity by manufacturing a humanoid robot defying moral decay and disaster.

Eva Koethen studied Fine Arts and Art Sciences in Munich and Berlin, earning her Ph.D. under Max Imdahl in Bochum. She taught at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin and held professorships at Leibniz University Hannover . Eva Koethen exhibits her work internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including the US, Japan and China.

Solo & Friends exhibits stand in the tradition of the (Jewish) salonières and the autonomous apartment exhibitions of the 1920s, 80s, and 00s in Berlin (Paris, Moscow, Beirut, Istanbul, etc.) Only one single work is exhibited –  accompanied by the entire ensemble of MKM artists.
